Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon that predisposes humans to decipher a face in patterns or inanimate objects. Some might say that it is evidence of paranoia, or a fear of being judged. I see faces all of the time when I am out photographing random patterns.

This one called to me as a peering face emerging from a sponge patterned lava boulder. Watching for what? Any answer would lead to many paths. Since we all return to the earth perhaps it whispers, “See you later.”

Randsburg, CA is a somewhat deserted mining town. I say somewhat because a few people still live there. There are three towns clustered here in what was the Rand Mining District. Word of mouth history tells me that Johannesburg was the bedroom community which supplied Randsburg most of its workers. Mining gold and conducting the supporting transactions took place in Randsburg. Red Mountain was the hub for release. Good times via drinking, gambling, and whoring. Today all three are very quiet towns inhabited by a hearty bunch who have found their space of peace and solitude.
