Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon that predisposes humans to decipher a face in patterns or inanimate objects. Some might say that it is evidence of paranoia, or a fear of being judged. I see faces all of the time when I am out photographing random patterns.

This one called to me as a peering face emerging from a sponge patterned lava boulder. Watching for what? Any answer would lead to many paths. Since we all return to the earth perhaps it whispers, “See you later.”

Perfection is boring. This is one reason why I still shoot with film. Presently all of my B&W images are sourced from film negatives. This gives the final image more of a craft look. I want my work to have a human touch, not that of some CGI’ed IMAX screen saver.

Lot’s wife, Edith dared to look back at the destruction of Sodom, thus receiving the wrath of God and becoming a pillar of salt. This area near Trona, CA is an ancient lake bead made mostly of basalt. Huge monoliths dot this lake to form strange structures.
