Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon that predisposes humans to decipher a face in patterns or inanimate objects. Some might say that it is evidence of paranoia, or a fear of being judged. I see faces all of the time when I am out photographing random patterns.

This one called to me as a peering face emerging from a sponge patterned lava boulder. Watching for what? Any answer would lead to many paths. Since we all return to the earth perhaps it whispers, “See you later.”

When I had a job in the corporate world I was laid off twice. The second time pushed me into unemployment for three and a half years. I did reenter the workforce and landed a reasonably good position. However, every month of service was simply a step closer to my exit strategy. I would bring my camera to work regularly, carrying it with me on my mental health breaks. This montage is a collection of images from those breaks away from the cubical. Such pleasure kept me on track to break free on my terms.
